We were out of power for two days in Alpine/Japatul Canyon area where I live. No lights, no heat, no charging our phones—just the deep, humbling quiet of the dark at night. Let me tell you, nothing makes you appreciate the power grid like losing it.
But in those two days, as I sat bundled up and reflecting, it hit me: this is what happens when we’re disconnected from God. Without the power source, everything feels harder, darker, colder. That same feeling can creep into our souls when we lose touch with Him through prayer.
Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Just like the power lines connect us to the grid, prayer connects us to God, the ultimate Source of life and light. When the connection is strong, His power flows into every part of our lives, bringing hope, warmth, and purpose. But when we unplug—or let the connection fray—everything gets a little harder, doesn’t it?
Christmas is the perfect time to reconnect. It’s the season when we remember that God didn’t leave us in the dark. He sent Jesus, the Light of the World (John 8:12), to step into our brokenness and reconnect us to Himself. Christmas is God’s way of saying, “I see you fumbling around in the dark, and I’m here to help. Let me turn the lights back on.”
Think about it: the baby in the manger is God’s rescue plan for a world stumbling without power. When we celebrate Christmas, we’re not just decorating trees or wrapping presents; we’re celebrating that God made a way to reconnect us to His love, His grace, and His eternal light.
I love how Isaiah puts it: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness, a light has dawned” (Isaiah 9:2). That’s what Christmas is all about. Jesus is that great light.
But here’s the thing: just like the power grid doesn’t work unless you’re plugged in, our faith doesn’t come alive unless we stay connected. Prayer is the plug. Worship is the circuit. Acts of love are the glow that shows His power in us.
So let me ask you: how’s your connection? If it’s been a little dim, Christmas is the perfect time to restore it. Sit down, take a moment, and just talk to Him. Pour out your heart. Thank Him for the gift of Jesus. Ask Him to help you see His light in the places that feel dark.
As we gather around the glow of Christmas lights this year, let’s remember the true Light that came to bring us back to God. Let’s make this a season of connection—because when we’re connected to Him, everything else falls into place.
Merry Christmas, friends. May the Light of the World shine brightly in your hearts this season.
Warmly,
Charlie Wear
