Last I heard from the Riverside County Sheriff, my nephew, Johnathan Christopher (Chris) Wear, was homeless and dumpster diving in Highgrove, CA—apparently living the minimalist lifestyle a little too literally. I promised my brother, Thomas Johnathan Wear (John), that I’d look after Chris if or when my brother died. Sadly, he checked out early at 59, riding his Harley Davidson in a motorcycle accident—a dramatic exit if there ever was one. That was twelve years ago, and I did take Chris in and look after him, right up until he decided his medication was just a suggestion. Chris is sharp, a poet, and a songwriter. Below you can see him performing his original piece, “On Your Leash,” with my stepson, Nathan Hartle, backing him up like the world’s most patient sidekick.
