Tomorrow, September 23, is National Great American Pot Pie Day.
Apparently it’s also National Checkers Day, Snack Stick Day, Restless Legs Awareness Day, International Day of Sign Languages, Innergize Day, and See You at the Pole.
That’s a lot of responsibility for one Wednesday.
My plan is fairly simple:
Pray.
Eat a pot pie.
Play checkers if somebody brings the board.
Take a Philippians 4 Chill Pill.
And continue my lifelong project of being a fat man trying to get to Heaven.
Fortunately, Jesus never said skinny people get there first.
He did mention a narrow gate, which gives me some concern, but I’m trusting grace and hoping the gate isn’t equipped with one of those airline carry-on measuring devices.
Seriously, though, all these “National Days” remind me that ordinary life can be holy.
We can pray at a flagpole.
Learn to communicate with someone who communicates differently.
Rest.
Laugh.
Share a meal.
Call somebody who’s lonely.
Make a little peace in a chaotic world.
And yes, eat a pot pie.
Jesus spent an amazing amount of His ministry around ordinary people doing ordinary things—walking roads, sitting at tables, attending weddings, eating meals and talking about God.
Maybe following Jesus doesn’t always require finding some spectacular spiritual moment.
Maybe we just invite Him into this one.
So tomorrow I’m celebrating life, laughter, prayer, peace, pot pie—and the outrageous grace of God.
Because underneath all the chaos, I’m still learning the same thing:
Getting free. Following Jesus. One moment at a time.
And if you see me reaching for a second pot pie—
please remind me that gluttony didn’t get its own national holiday.
