Getting Free — One Fix-It Ticket at a Time

Today I’m checking on two fix-it tickets at the Needles courthouse.

This is not exactly how I envisioned spending my golden years.

The tickets involve a Dodge truck I no longer own.

I sold it.

For one dollar.

Apparently I am not Warren Buffett.

The truck is parked off the street, the new owner is out of town, the transfer paperwork hasn’t made its way through DMV yet, and I don’t have the paperwork I need.

In legal terminology, this is known as:

A mess.

Fortunately, I have some experience with those.

So today I’m doing something I’ve occasionally had difficulty doing during my 76 years on Earth:

I’m not trying to solve everything at once.

I’m asking for more time.

There’s a spiritual lesson hiding in there somewhere.

Bold as a Lion

Proverbs 28 begins:

“The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.”

Being bold doesn’t always mean charging into battle.

Sometimes boldness means showing up, telling the truth, asking what needs to be done and taking the next step.

That’s advocacy.

At Eagle Advocates, that’s what advocacy should mean: helping people understand the system, find their voice, and take the next right step.

Jesus was an advocate too.

He noticed people systems overlooked.

He defended people religious folks condemned.

He spoke truth to people with power.

But He also knew when to speak, when to listen and when to simply love the person standing in front of Him.

I’m still working on that last part.

Getting Free

Jesus said not to worry about tomorrow because tomorrow has enough trouble of its own.

Apparently He knew about the DMV.

So today I don’t need to solve 2027.

I need to deal faithfully with today.

Ask the questions.

Request the continuances.

Keep moving.

Pray.

And maybe take a Philippians 4 Chill Pill before explaining the entire history of the truck to some poor court clerk who only asked for my citation number.

That’s getting free.

Not pretending problems don’t exist.

Not declaring and decreeing them away.

Just trusting Jesus enough to take the next faithful step.

One day at a time.
One problem at a time.
One fix-it ticket at a time.

And next time I sell a truck for a dollar—

I’m getting a receipt.
