Charlie Wear’s Notes: A Fat Man Trying to Get to Heaven
I’ve been around church long enough to hear just about every secret formula for getting God’s attention. Pray harder. Fast longer. Give more. Get anointed by somebody who was anointed by somebody else.
Well, here’s a Charlie Wearism for you:
The secret of the anointing is that there is no secret other than surrender.
IT’S ALL ABOUT JESUS!
Psalm 23 begins with six words that settle the whole argument:
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Notice David didn’t say, “The Lord is my spiritual performance coach.” He said SHEPHERD!
Sheep aren’t particularly brilliant. They wander, get lost, eat things they shouldn’t, and occasionally need rescuing from their own stupidity.
Sounds like somebody I know.
Me!
I’m just a fat man trying to get to heaven, and I’ve discovered something wonderful. The Shepherd knows the way. I don’t have to figure out every turn.
He makes me lie down. He restores my soul. He leads me beside still waters.
And sometimes He has to use a shepherd’s crook to get my attention!
Then comes Proverbs 9.
Wisdom has prepared a feast and invited the simple to come eat. Folly has prepared her own invitation, promising stolen pleasures and shortcuts.
Both are calling.
One leads to life. The other leads to death.
And here’s the funny thing: Wisdom doesn’t demand that I become brilliant before coming to dinner.
She simply says, COME!
Jesus said something similar: “Follow me.”
Not impress me. Not entertain me. Not build me an empire.
FOLLOW ME.
The anointing isn’t about getting more of the Holy Spirit. It’s about the Holy Spirit getting more of me.
Psalm 23 tells me WHO leads.
Proverbs 9 tells me to CHOOSE wisely.
Jesus tells me to FOLLOW.
And surrender means saying YES, even when I cannot see the road ahead.
That’s enough theology for this old fat man today.
Pass the bread. Pour the coffee. Pull up a chair.
There’s room at Wisdom’s table for wandering sheep.
Stay human. Stay spiritual. Stay surrendered.
IT’S ALL ABOUT JESUS!
Can I get an AMEN now?
